Around the year 1000, a castle built on stilts already existed at the current site.
In 1613, the medieval valley castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance-style moated castle according to the plans of the Württemberg court architect Heinrich Schickhardt.
The small path that crossed the Ammer River via a steel bridge is now permanently closed.
