At Pillnitz, visitors especially appreciate the extensive grounds with numerous botanical features, in which you can stroll as you used to. Not to be missed is the more than 250-year-old camellia, which is protected in winter under a mobile glasshouse. The origin and the exact age of this unique plant are still unclear despite their fame. According to legend, the Swedish botanist Karl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) brought four camellias from his trip to Japan in 1779 in the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew in London One copy remained in Kew, the others are in the gardens Herrenhausen near Hannover, Schönbrunn near Vienna and Pillnitz have been passed on. Of these, the Pillnitz camellia would be the only surviving one. In 1801 it was planted at its present location, now it has a height of 8.60 meters and a diameter of almost eleven meters. During the flowering period from mid-February to April, it carries tens of thousands of bell-shaped and crimson flowers. Then also offshoots are sold in limited numbers.
