Of disused railways in Britain, this must be one of the best. Between the 1860s and 1920s, Rosedale was an important ironstone mining location. This track is what remains of the line that went from Battersby Junction across the moors to the large kilns at Bank Top. There are spectacular views from here of the dales down below and along the embankment.

Hiking

If you plan to hike around or across Rosedale, then the disused railway offers commanding views all around the north of the dale, and probably also offers the easiest surface to walk on. Even in the depths of a wet winter the hiking track is in good condition, never pot-holed and no standing water.
