The population of the southern part of the Labin area started working in mining almost 400 years ago and since then mining has been continuously developing and employing more and more people, not only from Labin and its surroundings, but also from all over Istria.

Mining reached its peak after World War I, when the mines were considered the most modern of their kind in Europe, employing more than 10,000 workers. Record production was achieved in 1942, amounting to 1,158,000 tons of coal.

After World War II, Istrian coal mines played a very important role in post-war reconstruction. However, the large coal reserves led to a reduction in production, which is why a gradual closure of the mines began in the 1970s. Most mines were shut down in the 1980s, mainly because they proved unprofitable.

Mining production was continued by the new company Istarski ugljenokopi Tupljak (Istrian Coal Mines Tupljak). This company finally shut down its mine in 1999, at the same time as the last coal mine in Croatia was shut down.
