Aremberg Castle was built in the 12th century by the Lords of Arenberg. As the Lords of Arenberg's reputation grew, the medieval castle complex was transformed into an impressive Renaissance fortress, which was destroyed by French troops in 1682. The baroque reconstruction suffered a similar fate in 1807 after it was sold for demolition in 1803. Today, the only thing that stands on Aremberg is the observation tower, built around 1854, from the surrounding rubble and remains of the walls of the once impressive fortifications.
