Pagensand is an island in the Lower Elbe. The island was originally a sandbank, which was enlarged and raised from 1900 by applying dredged Elbe silt to deepen the fairway. The island is about 5.8 km long, about 1 km wide and about 520 hectares in size. The island is uninhabited and has been a nature reserve since May 1997. Numerous rare animal and plant species find an undisturbed habitat on the island.
