The church was first mentioned in 1223, but the parish is probably older. Originally there was a Romanesque church here, but construction of a new, Gothic church began at the beginning of the 15th century. The choir was founded in 1437, as the inscription testifies: int iaer ons heren MCCCCXXXVII waert desen coer ghefondeert. The tower was built around 1500. It is not known whether the ship was created around 1437 or around 1500. All these parts are made in Maaskeien and Mergel.
