The Gëlle Fra Memorial originated in 1923 from a citizens' initiative and initially served as a memorial to the Luxembourgish soldiers who fell in the First World War (1914-1918). Today, it also honors the Luxembourgish soldiers who fell in the Second World War (1939-1945), the Luxembourgers who died in the Korean War (1950-1953), and the Luxembourgers who volunteered in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

Gëlle Fra herself led an emotionally charged and controversial life.
