Around 1540 there was probably a Klement Schäfer in Weiher, the village below the mountain, whose land was "under the rock". The Schäfer family name was later transferred to the adjacent wall, the Schäferwand. This name was used only for the rock face that rose above the Elbe, while the rest of the massif that stretched towards the Schaber is called Rotberg (Červený Vrch).
