De Snip was built in the mid-19th century to drain a 110 ha polder. A coker windmill had previously stood on the site. After a long period of decay the mill was restored in 1974-45 by the mill builder Tacoma from Stiens, Friesland. The wind shaft in the mill was from De Kolthofpoldermolen, Oosterbierum Friesland, which burned down on December 13, 1972. The mill used to have a wooden wind shaft. In 1977 De Snip was owned by the Workumer Stichting. The mill now belongs to the Molenstichting Sûdwest Fryslân. It's as Rijksmonument!
