    Former limestone quarries, closed in the 1960s, found new life after decades of abandonment starting in the fall of 1989 thanks to the idea of Bassano artist Toni Zarpellon, who cleaned them and created a surreal open-air museum, evolving and maintaining them for 28 years (!), by raising random stone blocks into the sculptural shapes of human and animal heads.

    There are four quarries, each with a theme or purpose:
    1. The PAINTED QUARRY, the first and most famous, created between 1989 and 1990, is a gray stone amphitheater in which human and animal figures have been drawn and colored—a kaleidoscope of colors and allegories;
    2. The QUARRY INHABITED, from 1990, is populated by 150 gas tanks and car exhausts, shaped and deformed into humanoid faces—a disturbing, mechanical bedlam;
    3. The QUARRY LABORATORY, from 2009, is a space open to visitors' imagination and experimentation, allowing them to unleash their creativity;
    4. The QUARRY THEATRE, also from 2009, was originally intended to host summer activities for children, but it never took off.

    At the artist's request, due to a personal need for artistic renewal, since January 1, 2018, the quarries have been abandoned to the ravages of time and overgrowth. The first two are still accessible and enjoyable; the last two are increasingly obsolete.

      In the Rubbio quarry, prof. Zarpellon found the environment to give space to creativity and at the same time created an artistic work of educational value that celebrates the rebirth of exploited and forgotten places.
