This garden was created in 2020, but is inspired by a medieval monastery garden. The structure is uncluttered, with square nursery beds and straight paths. The plants are grouped according to use: beds for edible plants, for medicinal herbs, for plants from which dyes were extracted, … There are even beds for species with a religious significance. For example, red roses refer to the blood of Christ and violets refer to the simplicity of the Virgin Mary.
Medieval monastery gardens were usually quite small and surrounded by a wall or hedge. That was practical - it protected against storms and wild animals - but an enclosed garden or hortus conclusus was also considered a reflection of paradise.
In the heart of the garden you see a water element. That too is symbolic: in the Middle Ages, people saw water as the source of all life. The evergreen yew hedge, on the other hand, refers to eternity.
