The Altamira bridge was put into service on August 22, 1963 due to the serious problem of urban and interprovincial traffic that existed in Elche, but the act of official recognition of the works was not until July 1967, being approved by the Police Station of Waters of the Júcar.

The Vinalopó River, despite having little importance as a fluvial resource, has considerable historical value within what was the culture of its ancient inhabitants. Its slopes have been inhabited by ancestors of our town since the Eneolithic, and it has always been a geographical point of some importance, because if it was used in antiquity as a defense ditch, it also had its utility in the surrounding orchard, taking advantage of its low flow for irrigation through ditches.
As it passes through the city it forms a wide ravine which is known by the popular name of "la rambla".
