This small house once served as a "service apartment" for the town council servant or shepherd. The town clerk's office was also housed here for a time.
Dwellings like this used to be called "dropper's house". They were mostly home to day laborers who had neither a yard nor a garden to call their own and were often not allowed to keep pets. The boundaries of their modest property were marked by the raindrops that fell from the gutter of their humble little house and dug a shallow depression in the ground. This is where the residents got their name "poor drops". There are still a few such houses in the old town of Zeiler.
Since its renovation in 1987, this small building, which was intended to remind people accustomed to comfort of the living conditions of our ancestors, has housed the tourist office. (Source: A walk through Zeil, p. 18)

The single-storey, narrow building, which in its current form dates from the 17th to 18th century, is used by the town of Zeil as a tourist office. It is documented that it was once used as a council servant's apartment and in 1830 as a shepherd's house for the community. Since then, ownership has changed hands several times between public and private. It currently belongs (again) to the town, which acquired it from the previous owner (Grohe) in 2008. Originally it was probably a gatehouse for the churchyard, to whose wall it is attached with its northern eaves side. In 1987, the house, which was in dire need of renovation, was completely renovated. The front gable side is covered with plain half-timbering, otherwise it is solid and plastered.
