The Poperingevaart is a canal that connects Poperinge with the river Yser, dug in 1166 by order of Count Philip van de Elzas.

In the 14th century, the Poperingevaart underwent some interventions to make it navigable. The stream was widened, a complex of locks was built, reservoirs were constructed and three ponds were to provide sufficient food for the stream. The Poperingevaart became navigable from 1366 from the center of Poperinge to the mouth in the Yser.
