The 19th century, with its striking clockwork of Lerwick, is the most significant city building. Due to its elevated position on the hillhead, the town hall dominates the cityscape of Lerwick. Its impressive stained glass windows symbolize Shetland's historical heritage and the pride of the city fathers. The town hall is open to visitors; the welcome committee will be happy to answer any further questions.

        A hall for everyone

In 1880 the idea of a new public hall became very popular with the people of Lerwick. Concerned that the city lacked a proper courtroom or a comfortable venue for concerts and dances, they raised money for a building that would represent "a testament to the culture and intelligence of the community."

The Town Hall campaign coincided with a herring boom in Shetland - it was a time of unprecedented prosperity and confidence, and donations to the Town Hall campaign came from all sectors of society.

Gradually the target sum of £4,000 was reached and in October 1881 the Lerwick building contractor, John Aitken, began work. Within two years the new town hall was being used with enthusiasm
