The Erxleben castle complex was divided in 1554 between 2 lines of the Alvensleben family. Therefore there are 2 castles in Erxleben, the old (now completely ruined) and the new castle. The branch office of the Flechtingen Association of Municipalities is now housed in the baroque palace of Erxleben.

The first installations of the Niederungsburg were built around 1100. Around 1270 they came into the possession of those from Alvensleben. The large Renaissance building of Erxleben II Castle, which housed a high school after the Second World War, has been empty for several years and is in acute danger of collapsing in places.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current status of Schloss Erxleben II, and can visitors access it?

Schloss Erxleben II, the large Renaissance building, has been vacant for several years and is unfortunately in acute danger of collapsing in places. While the exterior can be viewed, direct visitor access to the interior is currently not possible due to its condition. A local support association, "Förderverein Rettung Schlossanlagen Erxleben e.V.," is actively working on its preservation and revitalization.

Are there any specific walking or hiking trails directly around Schloss Erxleben?

While the immediate castle grounds offer paths for exploring the historical structures, dedicated long-distance hiking trails don't start directly from the castle. However, the surrounding region provides various walking routes and paths suitable for exploring the local area. You can find options for circular walks and easy strolls that incorporate views of the castle and nearby natural features.

What kind of terrain and elevation can I expect on walks near Schloss Erxleben?

The castle itself is situated at an elevation of 131 meters in a relatively flat area, characteristic of a 'Niederungsburg' (moated castle). Walks in the immediate vicinity and surrounding Börde district are generally considered easy with minimal elevation changes, making them suitable for casual strolls rather than challenging hikes.

Is Schloss Erxleben and its surrounding area suitable for families with children?

Yes, the area around Schloss Erxleben is generally family-friendly. The easy terrain of nearby walks makes them suitable for children. While the castle interiors are not fully accessible, exploring the exterior and grounds offers an educational experience about history and architecture. There are no specific playgrounds, but the open spaces are pleasant for a family outing.

Are dogs allowed on the castle grounds or on nearby trails?

Dogs are generally welcome on the exterior castle grounds and on most public walking paths in the surrounding area, provided they are kept on a leash. Please ensure you clean up after your pet to maintain the cleanliness of this historical site and natural environment.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options close to Schloss Erxleben?

Erxleben is a smaller municipality, so options directly adjacent to the castle might be limited. It's advisable to check local listings for cafes, pubs, or restaurants within Erxleben or nearby towns in the Börde district. For accommodation, you might find guesthouses or hotels in slightly larger neighboring communities.

What are some unique landmarks or natural features to look out for around Schloss Erxleben?

Beyond the distinct architectural styles of Schloss Erxleben I and II, the prominent 50-meter-high Hausmannsturm and the integrated Schlosskapelle St. Godehardi are key features. The complex itself, with its ceremonial and economic courtyards, offers a glimpse into centuries of history. The surrounding landscape of the Börde district is characterized by its agricultural fields and gentle topography.

Is there an entry fee or permit required to visit Schloss Erxleben?

There is no entry fee or permit required to access the exterior grounds of Schloss Erxleben and view the castle complex from the outside. As Schloss Erxleben I houses administrative offices and Schloss Erxleben II is currently unsafe, there are no public tours or interior access that would typically incur a fee.

How long does it typically take to walk around the Schloss Erxleben complex?

A leisurely walk around the exterior of the Schloss Erxleben complex, taking in both Schloss Erxleben I and II, the Hausmannsturm, and the courtyards, can typically be completed within 30 minutes to an hour. If you wish to explore the immediate surroundings or combine it with a short walk in the village, you might spend a bit longer.

What are the best times of year to visit Schloss Erxleben for comfortable walking and photography?

The milder seasons, such as late spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October), are ideal for visiting. During these times, the weather is generally pleasant for walking around the grounds and the natural light is often excellent for photography. Summer can also be good, but it may be warmer, while winter visits offer a different, often starker, aesthetic, though some paths might be less accessible depending on snow or ice.

Are there any 'hidden gems' or lesser-known aspects of Schloss Erxleben worth discovering?

The true 'hidden gem' of Schloss Erxleben lies in its intricate history and the visible evolution of architectural styles across its various buildings. Pay close attention to the details of the late Gothic facade of Schloss Erxleben II and the Renaissance elements, contrasting them with the Baroque Schloss Erxleben I. The ongoing efforts of the local support association to preserve this monument also represent a compelling story of community dedication.
