From 1661 to 1881 the Nikolaikirche did not have a tower. A particularly large roof spanned the remains of the old tower, which was not rebuilt. When Elmshorn was promoted to town in 1870, the community representative Kahlcke founded a tower building fund. The foundation stone was laid on May 25, 1880, and less than two years later, on October 3, 1881, the completed structure was removed. The Elmshorn architect Gottlieb Berghahn from Hanover had the tower built in neo-Gothic style according to the plan of the church builder Hillebrand. The tower is 54.93 meters high (Wikipedia).

The most important and oldest church building in the city is located in the heart of Elmshorn: the church of St. Nikolai. The Gothic hall church with its baroque furnishings is regularly open thanks to the commitment of many volunteer church leaders.

The eventful history of the parish dates back to the 14th century. The church at “Elmshorne” was first mentioned in 1347 in a directory of the Hamburg Cathedral. In 1362 the church in Elmshorn, which is dedicated to St. Nicholas, is mentioned in a contract of sale by the Raboisen brothers.
