    Caesarius von Heisterbach was a monk and master of novices at the Cistercian monastery of Heisterbach in the Siebengebirge and an extraordinarily prolific writer. He wrote 39 writings in about 30 years. His entire oeuvre not only testifies to his personal ability, but also to the intellectual climate in the young Cistercian abbey. With his work, Caesarius also made Heisterbach widely known.

      Poem "THE MONK OF HEISTERBACH":
      A young monk in the monastery of Heisterbach
      is strolling in the furthest place of the garden;
      he ponders eternity quietly and deeply,
      and in the process researches God's holy word.
      He reads what Peter the Apostle said:
      To the Lord a day is like a thousand years,
      and a thousand years are like a day to him! -
      But no matter how he ponders, it never becomes clear to him.
      And he loses himself doubtfully in the forest;
      he does not hear or see what is going on around him.
      It is only when the pious vespers bell rings that he is reminded of his serious monastic duty.
      He quickly reaches the garden as he runs,
      a stranger opens the gate for him;
      He is taken aback - but look, the church is already shining brightly,
      and the holy choir of the brothers can be heard from it. He rushes to his chair - but, strangely, someone else is sitting there! He looks over the long rows of monks, but he finds no one there. The amazed man is stared at all around: People ask for names, people ask what they want. He says it - then they murmur through the sanctuary "No one has been called that for three hundred years!" "The last person to have that name," they then say, "He was a doubter and disappeared in the forest; no one was given the name from then on." He hears the word - a chill runs down his spine. He just names the abbot and the year. They pick up the old monastery book; then a great miracle of God becomes clear: It is he who disappeared for three centuries! Ha, what a solution! Suddenly his hair turns grey,
      he sinks down and is doomed to death,
      and as he dies he warns his band of brothers:
      "God is above place and time."
      "What he conceals can only be made clear by a miracle;
      so don't brood, think about my fate!
      I know that a day is like a thousand years to him,
      and a thousand years are like a day to him!"
      (Wolfgang Müller, "Summer Days in the Siebengebirge", 1867)
