The Mizmaze on St Catherine's Hill is a rare and historic turf labyrinth, cut into the chalk of the hilltop and believed to date from the 17th century, though its design is medieval. Unlike a true maze, it is a unicursal labyrinth, meaning it consists of a single, winding path—estimated at over 600 meters long—that leads inevitably from the entrance to the center without any junctions or dead ends. Unusually for an English turf maze, it is rectangular rather than circular, and the path itself is the narrow groove cut into the chalk, rather than the raised turf. Its purpose is debated, with theories suggesting it was used for devotional practices or as a recreational pastime for the students of nearby Winchester College, who famously refer to the walk as "tolling the Labyrinth."
