    LOURDES GROTTO

This grotto was built in 1958 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the apparition of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes.
Philipp Mehler, a Gambach native, vowed to establish a place of worship in his hometown after a miraculous rescue during World War I.
This grotto was built in the former quarry in the vineyards of Gambach. Mehler brought the statue of the Virgin Mary with him after a pilgrimage from Lourdes.

The Lourdes Grotto refers to the Marian Grottoes, which are replicas of the Grotto of Massabielle near Lourdes in southern France and Our Lady of Lourdes. According to her own statements, Saint Bernadette saw the Mother of God in this grotto in 1858. In the place of the Marian apparitions, a Madonna figure adorns the grotto, the original of which Joseph-Hugues Fabisch created for Massabielle in 1864 according to Bernadette's instructions.
