The sculptures of the peat women were erected by the sculptor Karl-Ludwig Bölke in 1990. To honor the hard work of these women, who filled the peat into baskets and then loaded it onto the horse-drawn carts and to keep the memory of the lively port operations in times past alive, a monument was dedicated to the "Törfwieven".
