The history of the development of the Lutheran community and its church buildings goes back far into the 18th century. Johannette Wilhelmine, the young bride of the ruling Landgrave Simon Henrich Adolph zur Lippe, who was a member of the Reformed faith, was given permission to practice her Lutheran faith in 1719. She was supported by the preacher Konrad Stein.

Soon the rooms allocated for this purpose in the castle were no longer sufficient for the growing number of Lutherans. A small church was built in Schülerstrasse - with an octagonal floor plan in the Baroque style. In addition, the manor house in the neighborhood, which formerly belonged to the noble family v. d. Borch, was purchased. It is still used as a rectory and community center today.

The two buildings served the lively community life for 150 years until the decision was made in 1895 to accommodate the steadily growing community. The planning and construction was entrusted to the architect Fischer from Barmen, and the Baroque church was demolished shortly afterwards. The foundation stone for the new building was laid in 1896. The church, built in the neo-Gothic style, was consecrated in 1898.

Renovated several times in the following decades and redesigned inside, the well-proportioned church space is now in light pastel tones. The materials sandstone and wood dominate the look, and subtle painting underlines the structural conditions. The nave and a suggested transept are vaulted by Gothic cross ribs, each of which ends in an individually designed keystone. Two large rose windows illuminate the transept. The church pews can accommodate around 450 people and the gallery has additional seats and the organ built in 2009 by the Kiel-based company Paschen.
