Every year, a pair of storks breed on a nesting pole in the middle of the Buylaers nature reserve in Lokeren. Vzw Durme wants everyone to be able to enjoy this natural spectacle.
The fixed binoculars are mounted on a pole and have a magnification of 20.

Storks are migratory birds. At the end of the summer they leave for the south, even as far as West Africa. But some birds stay here. They get food from people, or lose the instinct to migrate. In the Buylaers you can see both migratory birds and wintering birds. Every year there is a fight for the nest.
This 9 meter high nest pole was placed in January 2014. On top of the pole is a metal construction on which storks can build a nest.
For several years now, storks have been regular guests in the Buylaers nature reserve. In 2013, a breeding attempt was made for the first time on the chimney of a house in the Rozenstraat, right next to the reserve. Unfortunately, the breeding failed and no young were raised. Because the birds are very loyal to their breeding area, vzw Durme placed a nest pole. And with success! Since then, the nest has been added to every year.
Old nests can weigh up to 2 tons!
