According to legend, the devil was once sitting here at his table having lunch when the bells rang from St. Hermann in Bischofsmais. Filled with horror and anger, the devil left his meal behind and fled. The meal, a roast pork with dumplings, is said to still be found fossilized today.
During a hike at the Devil's Table you have the impression that you can still hear the devil cursing, the shapes that nature has created on this ridge seem so bizarre and eerie. In the warm, humid climate of the Tertiary period over five million years ago, the surface of the bedrock weathered deeply. However, hidden deep in the weathered rubble, individual solid blocks of rock were able to survive. During the ice ages, the encrusted material was removed and blocks of rock were prepared as hardenings. This resulted in the forms of so-called wool sack weathering typical of granite rock, which can be easily studied at the Devil's Table.

There are many rocks around the Devil's Table. A nice experience for children too.
