It goes back to a suggestion by the mayor of Gdansk, Bartholomäus Schachmann, who, after a trip to Italy, decided to decorate Gdansk with a monument in honor of the sea god Neptune. The Neptune figure was created by the sculptors Peter Husen and Johann Rogge; the fountain itself was designed by Abraham van den Blocke, who also did all the stonemasonry (basin, bowl and column). The iron latticework dates from 1634.
