The Kesslertanz (including Kesselersdanz, Kesslertantz) is the name of an alleged witches' dance place from the 16th century in the forest of Büdingen. To this day, the field name Kesslertanz exists between the village of Rinderbügen and the Büdinger Forest. During the time of the witch hunts, women accused of being “witches” were suspected of having been at the Kesslers Danz.

The dance places are often old courthouses or other special places. The witches of Büdingen allegedly visited the Pfaffenwald, the Breitenborn or a place in the Büdinger Forest, called “Khesselers dantz”.

In 1597, four women from the town of Rinderbügen were accused in a witch trial of having taken part in the witches' Sabbath (described in more detail under Rinderbügen).

      Constitutio Criminalis Carolina of 1532
The “Embarrassing Neck Court Code” of Emperor Charles V was the first general German penal code.
In the inquisition trial, the judge was also the prosecutor; the court must provide the evidence.
Only the main facts, not circumstantial evidence, were allowed to lead to conviction. In the case of witness statements, two consistent statements from witnesses were required. If these were missing, the defendant had to be made to confess.
Torture could only be used if there was a high degree of certainty as to guilt. Before the torture could begin, a judicial interrogation had to be carried out. The confession made under torture could only be used if the defendant confirmed it the next day.
Torture was used to extort confessions. A standardized questionnaire was often “processed”.
The defendants did not confess during the ordeal.
