In 1725, Johanngeorgenstadt was one of the first cities in Saxony to receive a whole and a half mile column as well as a quarter milestone. A coat of arms adorned distance column was erected on August 11, 1728 on the market square. Setting the column was originally supposed to cost 45 thalers, but it ended up being more than 62 thalers. The column was made by stonemason Matthias Lambacher. It consists of granite mined near Brettmühl. The Freiberg stonemason made the coat of arms of the column from Niederschönaer sandstone.

Around 1900, Alban Tittel had the column restored by the Erzgebirge branch association.

Due to the mining activities of SDAG Wismut, the traffic on the Johanngeorgenstadt market square increased enormously at the beginning of the 1950s. A reversing truck rammed into the column, causing it to lose its top. It is believed that she fell onto the loading area and was taken away. From then on, the column stood on the market without a top.

After the missing tip was added, the spacer column was moved, because almost all the houses on the market square had been demolished from 1953. The column found its new location in front of the main post office in Neustadt. During the reconstruction, the coat of arms was rotated by 90 degrees. In 1977 the column was completely restored.
