In 1388, Allos and Barcelonnette passed to Savoy and Colmars-les-Alpes became a border town. It is then protected by a first medieval enclosure whose François 1st, during his wars against Charles V, will improve the defensive system.
It is especially at the end of the 14th century that the village will be equipped with a set of more developed fortifications which will give it its current appearance. Times are then troubled. With Victor-Amédée joining the League of Augsburg in 1690, war broke out between France and Savoy.
Louis XIV instructs Vauban to study a defense system to reinforce the border. Priority is given to the two redoubts intended to monitor the bridges: to the south a simple redoubt of square plan the Fort de France and to the north the larger Fort de Savoie.
Formerly the Fort of Savoie communicated with Colmars-les-Alpes by a covered way. Unlike the Fort de France located south of the city of Colmars, the Fort de Savoie is open to visits for an entrance fee.
