    Structure that guarded the border.

In 1388, Allos and Barcelonnette passed to Savoy and Colmars-les-Alpes became a border town. It was then protected by a first medieval wall whose defensive system was improved by François I during his wars against Charles Quint.
It was especially at the end of the 14th century that the village was equipped with a more developed set of fortifications which gave it its current appearance. The period was troubled. With Victor-Amédée joining the League of Augsburg in 1690, it was war between France and Savoy.
Louis XIV charged Vauban with studying a defense system to strengthen the border. Priority was given to the two redoubts intended to monitor the bridges: to the south a simple square redoubt, the Fort de France and to the north the larger Fort de Savoie.
The Fort de France measures 25 m on each side. It was intended to monitor the border and was occupied by soldiers from the garrison. It is open for visits every Thursday during the summer.
