The Gateshead Millennium Bridge spans the River Tyne between Gateshead Quays arts quarter on the south bank and the Quayside of Newcastle upon Tyne on the north bank. The bridge, which cost £22m to build, was the first tilting bridge in the world. Using two steel arches with a span of 328 feet (100 m) that can rotate 40 degrees to allow river traffic to pass underneath by tilting the pedestrian side upward to form a ‘V’ shape.

Opened in 2001. The world’s first tilting bridge. Carries cyclists and pedestrians between Newcastle and Gateshead. It belongs to Gateshead, not Newcastle!😀
