The Sint-Baafskerk is the oldest building in Aardenburg. The church was founded by monks from the Saint Bavo Abbey in Ghent in 959. In the oldest part of the church you will find building material that probably comes from the Roman Castellum from the years 175 to 270 AD. It is actually the largest museum in Zeeland.

Have you got a moment? Then pay a visit and learn more about the oldest building in Aardenburg.
In the thirteenth century, the church was expanded in a style that forms a transition between the Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles: the "Scheldt Gothic". In the middle of the fourteenth century, the church was expanded again, in "High Gothic style". From the fourteenth century until the Reformation, the church was repeatedly damaged by various warring factions and in 1582 the lead was stolen from the church by the French.

In the seventeenth century, a number of major restorations were necessary because the now Reformed church had suffered a lot from the Eighty Years' War. During these restorations, a plaque was placed with the year 1646 and above it the coat of arms of the generality. During this restoration, building material was also used from the other Aardenburg church, the Mariakerk.

In the Second World War, the Sint-Baafskerk was again hit by war violence. The last major restoration followed in the period that followed. During this restoration, gravestones of the Mariakerk were discovered, which had been used upside down as pavement tiles. When the floor was excavated again, a number of painted crypts from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries were found. A number of these were cast in a concrete box and these sarcophagi are displayed in the church. Special is the sarcophagus depicting Saint Sebastian, patron saint of, among others, the archers.
