1848
In 1848 an application was made to build a mill on the outskirts of Gruiten. But since Gruiten was often plagued by floods, there were immediately some objections. The necessary damming of the water, the residents argued, would lead to a rise in the water table and would initially flood the basement. Wilhelm Benninghofen was able to prove that the meadows here had been irrigated by a weir "since living memory" and without any flooding. In 1847 Benninghofen received the concession to build the mill. It was confirmed in 1849.
