The chapel was built in 1445 to commemorate the victory over the Appenzell and rebuilt in the Baroque style by Kaspar Held in 1698/99 according to plans by Christian Thumb. The sea chapel adjoining the town hall is dedicated to St. George and the Mother of God. A special feature is the Renaissance high altar (1615) by Esaias Gruber from the former palace chapel in Hofen in Lochau.

The small chapel, which is connected to the town hall, was donated in 1445 to commemorate the victory over the Appenzell in 1408. It was rebuilt 55 years later, baroque-styled and expanded at the end of the 17th century. An onion tower crowns the simple architecture. Inside there are magnificent Renaissance altars.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I plan for a visit to the Gedenktafel an der Seekapelle?

While the memorial plaque itself can be viewed in a few minutes, we recommend allocating 20-30 minutes to fully appreciate the historical significance of both the plaque and the Seekapelle chapel. This allows time for quiet reflection, reading the information panel, and observing the chapel's Baroque architecture and Renaissance altar.

Is the Gedenktafel an der Seekapelle wheelchair accessible?

The memorial plaque is located in a niche at the base of the chapel's tower, which is generally accessible from the street level. The immediate area around the chapel is flat. However, access to the interior of the Seekapelle chapel itself might involve steps, so visitors with mobility concerns should be aware of this potential limitation for entering the chapel building.

Are there specific parking recommendations for visitors arriving by car?

While the intro mentions parking is available, it's worth noting that city center parking in Bregenz can be limited, especially during peak season. Consider using the underground parking garages such as Parkgarage Seestadt or Parkgarage Rathaus, which are a short walk from the Seekapelle. Arriving earlier in the day can also help secure a spot.

What public transport options are best for reaching the Seekapelle?

The Seekapelle is centrally located and well-served by Bregenz's public transport network. Numerous bus lines stop at 'Bregenz Hafen' or 'Bregenz Stadtmitte', both just a few minutes' walk away. The Bregenz train station (Bahnhof Bregenz) is also within easy walking distance, making it convenient for visitors arriving by train.

Are there any dog-friendly walks directly from the Gedenktafel an der Seekapelle?

While the immediate area around the memorial is an urban setting, the Seekapelle serves as an excellent starting point for dog-friendly strolls. You can easily access the Lake Constance promenade, which offers scenic, flat paths perfect for walks with leashed dogs. Many parks and green spaces along the lake are also welcoming to dogs.

What are some family-friendly activities near the Gedenktafel an der Seekapelle?

Beyond exploring the historic chapel, families can enjoy a leisurely walk along the nearby Lake Constance promenade, visit the Bregenz Harbor to see the boats, or take a ride on the Pfänderbahn cable car for panoramic views (a short bus ride away). The Vorarlberg Museum, also close by, offers engaging exhibits suitable for various ages.

What should I wear if visiting the Gedenktafel an der Seekapelle in winter?

Bregenz winters can be cold, especially near the lake. We recommend dressing in warm layers, including a heavy coat, hat, gloves, and a scarf. Comfortable, waterproof shoes are also advisable, as sidewalks can be damp or icy. The memorial is outdoors, so prepare for exposure to winter elements.

Are there specific cafes or restaurants recommended near the Seekapelle?

The Seekapelle is situated in the heart of Bregenz, offering a wide array of dining options. You'll find numerous cafes and restaurants within a 5-10 minute walk, ranging from traditional Austrian eateries to international cuisine. Many establishments along the Rathausstraße and near the harbor offer outdoor seating during warmer months.

Can I find viewpoints or natural features close to the memorial?

Absolutely. The most prominent natural feature is Lake Constance itself, with its beautiful promenade just a stone's throw away, offering expansive views. For a more elevated perspective, consider taking the Pfänderbahn cable car (a short distance from the chapel) up to the Pfänder mountain, which provides breathtaking panoramic views of the lake, city, and surrounding Alps.

Are there any circular walks starting directly from the Gedenktafel an der Seekapelle?

Yes, the Gedenktafel an der Seekapelle is an ideal starting point for urban circular walks. You can easily design a route that takes you through the historic Old Town (Oberstadt), along the picturesque Lake Constance promenade, past the Bregenz Festival House (Festspielhaus), and back towards the city center, all on relatively flat terrain suitable for all fitness levels.

What other significant monuments are worth visiting in Bregenz besides the Seekapelle?

Bregenz boasts several other notable monuments. Consider visiting the Martinsturm (St. Martin's Tower) in the Old Town for historical insights and city views, or the Herz-Jesu-Kirche (Sacred Heart Church) for its impressive architecture. The Kunsthaus Bregenz (KUB), though modern, is also a significant architectural landmark.
