The memorial stone near Hagen (a district of the town of Wittingen in the Gifhorn district) is an important historical testimony that commemorates the dark chapters of German history at the end of the Second World War. It primarily concerns the so-called death marches of prisoners from the concentration camps. In April 1945, shortly before the arrival of the Allied troops, the National Socialists cleared the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp (near Nordhausen). Thousands of prisoners were driven north in cattle wagons or on foot.
