The castle was first mentioned in 1426 as a fiefdom of the Electorate of Mainz. Above the entrance there, Johann Philipp Friedrich Forstmeister von Gelnhausen had the coat of arms of alliance between the Forstmeister von Gelnhausen and the Herren von Schleifras attached. It shows the wolf's rod of those of Forstmeister with the cross of the crusaders and the ax and kettle hook of those of Schleifras, above the old count's crown with foliage.
