When you take the stairs next to the Quarry Viewpoint down stairs you will have a view inside the walls. Nice to have a short pauze here and have a look around.

Fantastic viewpoint, high above the former ENCI mine.

From the viewing platform, look down into the ENCI quarry and see the deep blue lakes.

Due to marl mining, the continuation of the former Luikerweg has disappeared; the platform symbolizes this continuation today. From the platform, you can look into the quarry and see the lakes with their deep blue color, which is due to the reflection of the blue sky in the depths of the water. The deepest point of the quarry is 5 m above sea level, and the Meuse River is at 45 m above sea level here.

We owe the origins of this quarry to ENCI (First Dutch Cement Industry). Starting in 1926, the highly calcareous marl was mined here in the heart of Sint Pietersberg for the cement industry. 900,000 tons of cement were produced here, and the striking chimney of the ENCI factory towers high above the landscape. As of 2018, marl mining ceased, and thanks to the Natuurmonumenten (Nature Monuments), more space was given to nature.

Here you get a magnificent view of the former quarry. From here, you have free access to the many lakes via a staircase. A very entertaining hike with fantastic views.
