The historic rail transport Wesel uses the routes of the Wesel harbor railway, the RWE industrial railway and the tracks of DB Netz in Wesel station. The former are two sections of the old railway line Haltern-Venlo. Beginning and end are the breakpoints Rheinpromenade and Hohe Mark. The line was opened in 1874 and was part of the transcontinental railway project Paris-Hamburger-Bahn.
In 1945, the Rhine bridge was blown up by the Wehrmacht. The ruins are still in parts and are listed.
