This limit was also the reason why the route was only passable 60 years after the construction of the Murg Valley Railway began. Previously, sections of Rastatt and Freudenstadt were passable.
There has only been a continuous path in the valley floor for a little more than 200 years; before that, in order to overcome the narrow Murgtal, a high path had to be taken.
