At the foot of the statue there is (since 2009) a memorial plaque with the names of all Nieuwpoort fishermen who never returned home. For the surviving relatives, the Fisherman's Monument functions as a kind of grave and a place of reflection.
A serene celebration takes place here every year on Pentecost Monday. Family members of deceased fishermen, together with government agencies and associations, lay a wreath of flowers there.
