In 1883/84, an administrative building in the Neo-Renaissance style was constructed at the corner of Fraumünsterstrasse and Kappelergasse under the direction of city architect Arnold Geiser.
Between 1898 and 1900, ETH professor Gustav Gull expanded Geiser's building into the present-day City Hall. This historicist building combines various stylistic elements: The facade is predominantly Neo-Gothic, although elements from other stylistic periods can also be found. The glass-roofed arcaded courtyard, on the other hand, is designed in the Neo-Renaissance style.

After more than 100 years of operation, the City Hall underwent comprehensive interior and exterior renovations from May 2007 to November 2010, optimizing its function as a significant venue for political and cultural life.
The renovations primarily addressed structural deficiencies related to personal safety, compliance with legal regulations, and age-related maintenance needs. The goal of creating modern workspaces was also a driving force behind the planned construction measures.
As of November 1, 2010, all temporarily relocated departments returned to the City Hall (including the Office for Gender Equality).
