As early as 1902, the Amberg Beautification Association had plans to build an observation tower at the exposed location where the observation tower is today. It was not until more than 70 years later that this idea was realized by the Massenricht branch of the Upper Palatinate Forest Association, chaired by Hermann Frieser. In the fall of 1976, the construction work for the construction of the 32 m high observation tower began, on August 15, 1977 the tower was inaugurated. The structure is completely cast in in-situ concrete. The construction costs amounted to around 200,000 DM, part of which could be achieved through own work and grants. In 2014 and 2015, the observation tower was renovated as part of the "Geological Expedition - Upper Palatinate and Western Bohemia" project. As part of the renovation work, a panorama picture was also installed to help interested visitors to orientate themselves on the top viewing platform, which is accessible via 158 steps.

From the Rödlas lookout tower you can see the entire northern Upper Palatinate and parts of Franconia. The basalt cone Rauher Kulm and the rose quartz rock Parkstein are just as recognizable as the Ochsenkopf, the Schneeberg, the Kösseine and Franconian Switzerland.
