The former collegiate church of St. Lubentius, built on a limestone cliff, towers over the Lahn valley and can be seen from afar. From the rock plateau on which it stands, there is a magnificent view over the valley. The Romanesque complex can be considered one of the most beautiful churches in Germany, mainly because of its location. It owes its name to Saint Lubentius, whose remains were brought here from Kobern on the Moselle by Archbishop Hetti of Trier before 841.
An older Carolingian complex was replaced around the year 1000, which has been modified several times over the centuries through additions and conversions. This building from the Ottonian period was built as a basilica with a semicircular central apse. In the Salian period, in the second half of the 11th century, the nave and transept were extended. This required retaining walls on the steeply sloping rock. The lower floors of the two towers, which are not parallel and have different heights, were also built during this period.
In the second half of the 12th century, the nave was raised and galleries were installed above the aisles, and the towers were completed. Cross vaults were built into the transept and crossing under the Gothic influence.
Two chapels are attached to the church, in the northeast the Michaelskapelle (around 1000) and in the southeast the Trinity Chapel (first mentioned in 1378).
Inside the church, the work of the baroque period made of Lahnmamor, polished limestone from the immediate vicinity, should be highlighted.
