At this point, the importance of the Altmühltal for the study of the geological ages and extinct species shows. In 1874, the skeletal imprint of the Archeopteryx was found on a stone slab. The peculiarity: around the small skeleton one could clearly recognize the petrified impression of feathers. This was the missing link from the dinosaurs to the birds found. Archeopteryx is considered to be the most primeval bird with clear signs of its reptilian origin, and was clear evidence of the correctness of Darwin's theory of evolution.
