Dr. John Grant Smith was born in Lochside, Halkirk, but did not follow in his father's footsteps. He chose to become a doctor. He studied in Edinburgh and practiced medicine in Thurso for some forty-four years until his sudden death in 1898 at the age of 67. By then he had become a highly regarded physician and a recognized authority in the health sciences. Such was the respect among the people for this man that after his death the people of Thurso dedicated this monument to his memory and financed its costs by public subscription.
