Since the 10th century, Carsan has been a parish of the Diocese of Uzès. As early as 1265, a church and a monastery in Carsan were mentioned in a document entitled "Claustrum et prioratus Beatae Mariae de Carsan". It seems that in fact of a monastery one cannot make out anything other than a cloister for the prior, that is for the priest who held the function of priest. However, in 1424 the church and monastery of Carsan were chosen by the seneschal of Beaucaire and Nîmes to found a male monastery, which was confirmed in 1425 by a bull from Pope Martin V. The hermitage of Notre Dame de Carsan occupies a special place in the history of the diocese of Uzès. Benedictine , it has almost no ties to the Order and has nothing in common with the great Cluniac abbeys.
