A very nice scenic route with plenty of places to stop and enjoy the view of the Ardèche below.

A great scenic route with lots of viewpoints to take pictures. In high season it's best to go before 10am (even better before 9am) to avoid most of the tourists and traffic.

In the off-season, the panoramic road, which leads partly through and usually far above the Gorges de l'Ardéche, well passable with the road bike. The traffic is bearable at this time. In the high season it is much fuller and the overtaking traffic can be very annoying.
If you drive from Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, you have to overcome a steep climb of about 240 meters after a few kilometers. The rest of the way to Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche is then wavy or downhill. The opposite direction has the longest slope right at the beginning, but is less steep.
In terms of the view, it does not matter in which direction you drive. For the great views down into the Gorges de l'Ardéche, it makes sense anyway to stop at the many vantage points and you usually have to go just short on foot to the edge of the "Balcone".
