There is said to have been a church as early as the 7th century, which was also the mother church of Edelare, Leupegem and Pamele.
The church was first mentioned in 1110. The right of patronage then came into the possession of the Abbey of Ename. A single-aisled Romanesque church, built of Tournai stone, is said to date from this period.
Around 1500, a southern side chapel was added, as well as a small choir that possibly replaced a Romanesque choir. Furthermore, the originally Romanesque windows were enlarged and a new portal was built.
Around 1700 the roof was fitted with a roof ridge.
