At the so-called "Strait of Messina", which separates the Italian mainland from the island of Sicily, we encounter Greek mythology: According to the poet HOMER - whose dates of birth are unknown (the eighth and seventh centuries BC are generally assumed), but who is considered the author of the famous works Iliad and Odyssey - a female monster named Scylla lived in this strait, which repeatedly claimed victims among sailors.
