Lüne Abbey in Lüneburg is a very impressive women's monastery that has been continuously inhabited for almost 850 years. It has been expanded several times over the centuries, and since it has remained undamaged since 1372, the original structure can still be seen today.

The history of Lüne Abbey officially began in 1172 with the Bishop of Verden's permission for the pious women to establish a monastery here. From 1272 onwards, the convent lived according to the rules of Saint Benedict.

A great fire completely destroyed Lüne Abbey in 1372. However, reconstruction began immediately, and by 1420, the monastery church and cloistered quadrangle were built in the brick Gothic style that can still be seen today.
